When it comes to plus size wedding dresses and gowns, Kiyonna takes pride in helping brides say yes to the dress. We love to hear their stories and the journey it took to find the perfect dress.

We are extremely happy to share our interview with our bride Veronica on her special day with her husband, Brian and the unexpected lip sync they’ll never forget!

How did he pop the question or how did the proposal go down?

We try to celebrate every anniversary with a trip, traveling is super important in our relationship. January 4th, 2018 we celebrated our 3 year anniversary (yes! Today is actually our 6th anniversary.) That year, since I am a Disney fanatic, and neither of us had ever been, we decided to fly to Orlando and celebrate our three year anniversary at Disney World. On the third day of our trip, January 10, 2018, we finally made it into Magic Kingdom. I was so excited to see the castle for the first time, as I had only seen it in the intro of every Disney movie growing up.

Within 20 minutes of entering and admiring Main St, I saw a man get down on one knee and ask his girlfriend to marry him. I literally had tears in my eyes because I was so excited for them and that I had gotten to see a Disney proposal. Little did I know, it was my own Disney proposal shortly later that would be the one forever in my memory. We got in line to have a photographer take our photo. Our time is here, and we get into position in front of the castle. Our first pose was kissing, LITERALLY in that moment, the daytime fireworks began going off. Perfect timing! We posed in a few different positions, and my husband asked to take one more. Which didn’t seem uncommon, since I am a wheelchair user and he usually stands and kneels for photos. I turned my head to get my hair out of my face, and then at that moment the most handsome man kneeled before me with an open box. Immediate tears ran down my face, and within seconds people are swarming us, and I’m bawling my eyes out on Main Street. I said yes to the man of my dreams that day and it truly was the happiest place on Earth.

How did you two meet?

We met at a local bar, where we were meeting with a charity organization we were both in. Upon arrival, the seat next to me was available. We had an immediate connection and spent the next few hours talking about everything and anything. There was a guy at the table next to us, and he leaned over and said “Y’all two are really cute together!” I laughed awkwardly and admitted we had only just met. We brushed it off and continued talking, about an hour later the same dude leaned over again and said “Seriously, you guys are perfect for each other.” We both laughed it off and tried to ignore the comments without making it weird. Again, an hour later, he leaned over and said “Dude, just kiss her already.” So I leaned over and grabbed his face and kissed him. Shot my head over and said “You happy?!” And he smiled and turned back to his table. We ended the night by going to a cafe with a few people in the group and have now been together ever since.

Looking back, what is the most memorable moment on your wedding day?

Our first dance. We took dance lessons for months before our big day, and it was such a fun experience. It’s not easy to slow dance in a wheelchair without it looking awkward, so I wanted something that would still be romantic. We danced to “Such a Night” by Michael Buble.

How was your shopping experience with Kiyonna?

The Amour Lace caught my eye, but I was scared of how tight the fit would be. I debated it for a few days, and then I decided to take a chance. The dress came quickly and I tried it on at home by myself, in fear that it would be another disappointment. The stretchy material made the process of trying it on so easy on me. Although the fit is not the most flattering on my body shape, it fit so perfectly within the frame of my chair… and I was easily able to get it altered. I turned around and rolled up to the mirror, with so much ease of not getting the dress stuck in my wheels.

Why did you say “yes” to this Kiyonna dress?

I looked in the mirror and knew it was the one. The lace was beautiful, the chest’s cut was perfect, and the sleeves were the exact length that I had been wanting. I was so thankful to have purchased this beautiful dress, at such an affordable price, and dance all night long on my wedding day with ease.

Did you add an element to your wedding that was non-traditional or unique to you and your husband?

Oh goodness, this is a fun one! When sending out invites, we also sent a note card with some information. We hosted a lip sync battle for anyone to enter. We were all cracking up and having a great time. I began the battle by lip syncing Lizzo’s Truth Hurts. We had guests doing Post Malone, Whitney Houston, Nicki Minaj, and even a whole musical number of Lady Marmalade by Christina Aguilera. It was amazing!

Then, my DJ made a fun announcement about the battle and began playing Lizzo’s Truth Hurts… again. At that moment, a LIZZO DRAG QUEEN strutted out of the lobby and onto the dance floor! My bridal party and husband hired and surprised me with my own Lizzo! (They heard me sing her songs my entire bachelorette party… because c’mon, LIZZO!) I was in complete SHOCK. I laughed and danced the entire time. It was honestly the coolest thing!

What advice would you give a bride to be?

Remember, in the chaos of planning and trying to get everything perfect, this day is about the two of you. Don’t stress yourself out with needing to please everyone at your wedding. It’s about the two of you, this is your special day. Plan it around what makes it perfect for you. Everything else will fall into place.

Crying here just reading about the proposal!! Beautiful! Thank You for allowing the pictures, giving your personal fit history with clothing. I actually bought a dress I fell in love with yet felt it would not fit me or be comfortable! Scared I’d put it on, move and tear it beyond repair even. I use a walker, somedays, 2 canes.. most days, stay home due to I take too long to move around, plus storing /moving etc the walker. I am in awe of you finding love, appreciation for YOU! Your beauty inside. Thank You for reminding me there are appreciative people who look beyond , into the heart! May your life continue to be blessed! I so appreciate you! HUGS& Love across the miles.
